Restaurant Review: Proof

02 Apr

This past week I had the lovely opportunity to meet up with my friend Sam, fashionista blogger of Samantha on Style, who I hadn’t seen in ages.  She asked me to be her plus one at a blogger event at the Accessorize store in Union Station and then grab a drink and a bite to eat.  Check out Sam’s write up about the trendy baubles, bags and other various accessories we found here.

After making our purchases, we hopped on the metro and grabbed two seats at the bar at Proof.  Located in the Penn Quarter at 8th and G Streets, this restaurant boasts a central location near the Verizon Center, National Portrait Gallery, Spy Museum, Museum of Crime & Punishment and is very easily accessible to Metro–Gallery Place (green, red, yellow) & Metro Center (blue, orange, red) stops.

Categorized as nouveau American cuisine, Proof offers moderately priced fare (think $25 per dinner entree) and an extensive wine and spirits list.  It is clear that at this restaurant food is the focus while wine is the passion; after all, their website boasts the Benjamin Franklin quote “wine is proof that God loves us.”  The menu features a large selection of cheese and charcuterie options as well as an innovative selection of appetizers and entrees.  Sam and I shared some items from the charcuterie and cheese menus: jamon serrano – Spanish cured ham, Appalachian cow’s milk cheese from Virginia, Lenora goat’s milk cheese from Spain, and Pecorino sheep’s milk cheese from Italy.  Served with dried figs and other accent sauces, the flavors were delicious and our choices were thoroughly enjoyed.

Though the drink menu is very wine-centric, the clever cocktail list was quite alluring as well.  Despite my love of wine, it was a martini night.

I am looking forward to going back again, and would love to try Chef Karoum’s tuna tartare and foie gras appetizers!
